I left Jacksboro, TX on July 2cnd, heading toward Amarillo. The “road pig” had two passengers, full saddle bags, and even a luggage rack bag full of clothes, cameras, laptop and stuff! As my travel luck usually goes, I generally get wet when I ride away on one of these trips!
Did I mention that I was concerned about rain? My old rain suit had shrunk (yea right), so after a quick chat with my cousin in Fritch, he convinced me to buy a Harley Rain suit at one of the local dealers in Amarillo. So, several dollars later, I had a nice two piece suit...with a Harley Logo on the back... Later, I learned my purchase would be a wise choice.
Anyway, we got up the next morning, after a night of thunderstorms, and sure enough it was wet, with storms still in the area, and looked like it would be that way for several miles. We suited up and headed towards Colorado. Though the roads were soaked and holding water, it was a nice ride and temps were not too bad, though damp!
Staying in Fritch kept us from having to stop in Raton, NM as I usually do, so we just turned right on I25 and headed towards Trinidad. The ride was uneventful, with the Valkyrie getting poor fuel mileage as usual. We lunched along the way, and of course had a chance to chat with some other bikers.
As we approached Colorado Springs, thunderstorms were becoming evident, no, I think prominent would be a better way of describing it. Somehow, we failed to take pictures, but it probably had something to do with me trying to hurry in an attempt to get around them and stay dry! Despite our attempts, we got doused between Colorado Springs and Divide. The rain did quit eventually, but until then, it was intense, and visibility was poor. It was simply not safe to pull off of the road, so we trudged onward. We probably could have stopped in Woodland Park, but the rain was letting up a bit by then, and we trudged on. I was glad to see dryer roads as we turned south at Divide and headed up and down the narrow roads into Cripple Creek.
We got there fairly late in the day, and decided to go onto Canon City to spend the night, which has quickly become one of my other favorite cities in Colorado. The next morning we rode back to Cripple Creek. where, my dad was performing one of his chuckwagon events and making ice cream with his hit-n-miss engine for the Fourth of July celebration. We didn’t stay long, just a quick check to make sure things were going ok, take some pictures (the date stamp is wrong) and then head off and around the mountains towards Salida. read more....
Did I mention that I told my cousin that the Harley rainsuit leaked????
