Day 1 - 550 Miles

We made it to Colorado!!

We left Jacksboro, Texas around 7:45, not far from our desired KSU. The weather was cool. And, we decided to dodge Wichita Falls, Texas, where the long held “Hotter than Hell Hundred” bicycle ride was occurring.  There wasn't much to see or mention on this day, other than we were hot by the time we made Amarillo.  A fuel stop and lunch at McD’s was in order, and we moved on!  Driving across the Texas Panhandle North of Amarillo is about like most of western north Texas. There just isn't much to see.!

After a while (in Texas that means a little while), Clayton, New Mexico went by, and we changed time zones.  I always like it when I gain an hour; I figure that is an extra hour to ride!! Rain showers were forming, and little did we know that they would become the beign of our week long excursion.  As we approached Raton, it was beginning to rain, and my phone rang. Not a problem with my new headset, and the caller didn't even know I was riding the bike!!  I ended the call, and when the headset reconnected, my brother-n-law was voicing his concern about the moisture falling from the sky!!  It was the typical summer downpour, short lived, but drenching. I think it took the wind out of him!  He slowed down much more than I expected, but by the time we made it to Trinidad, I was dry. No rain gear was put on, but it would be for the next several days!

We rode through Trinidad, contemplating whether to push on or stop. One thing, I haven't mentioned was that we hadn't decided our destination. We had considered riding to Yellowstone, and at this point, still hadn't ruled it out. I was starting to lean against it, because I have a tendency to ride hard and I wasn't sure that my partner would appreciate my fast touring style. The20150829_202106 decision was made to turn around just north of Trinidad and spend the night there. I knew Walsenburg had limited accommodations, and if we going to tour Colorado, there was always Colorado hiway 12 thru La Veta to start out our venture.  A good meal and clean room always brightens spirits, as does a large Margarita!!  Day one ended and we pretty much decided to ride Colorado for a week!!

A quick picture thru the hotel window to prove we were somewhere! read more...
