La Veta Pass is an interesting ride. Nowadays, most people pass on by La Veta with barely a notice....but at one time, it was the preferred way to get to the area we had left. The is very scenic by today’s standards, but quite narrow and winding, so not a road to take if in a hurry. There are some rock abutments there that are actually quite rare. They resemble stone walls, but are naturally occurring. In some places they are quite tall, and the geologic forces required to push them out of the ground were quite tremendous... I wish we had a picture that detailed the view from one end, but we seemed to have missed that opportunity. We made our way through the pass and By the way, we were only showered on briefly, as we continued onward, the rain moved west and we missed it.
You could tell after several miles we were losing elevation, as things began to dry out and we saw fewer trees and more dirt. We did have a surprise on one sharp corner, it seems a car had ran off the road and down the embankment. Fortunately for them, it wasn’t as steep as most. I am glad I wasn’t pushing the speed envelope, it would have been more of a surprise than I had when I rounded the corner to see several State Patrol cars and a flagger in the way.
