Terlingua

Terlingua, Study Butte and Big Bend Country...

The remainder of the trip towards Terlingua was not as climatic as the first part, the temperature rose dramatically again and I finally removed my riding jacket to try to cool off.   I stopped outside of Terlingua to grab a couple of shots (of tequila?..just pictures!).  Then I stopped in downtown Terlingua to take a picture of the historical marker.   I decided not to tour the town, and moved on towards Study Butte. At the intersection of Highway 170 and 118 in Study Butte there was a nice convenience store, with attached restaurant. A good note for future reference!. I filled up with gas again at way less than 100 miles, but it was a good decision as I would later discover.

While at Study Butte, I saw 3 other bikes that were a long way from home too (Indiana and Ohio). After a quick chat, I headed on towards Big Bend National Park, the goal of my trip. It was now 2:30 in the afternoon and time was going to become a factor if I was going to make it to Del Rio that night.  Ironically as I checked in at the Park station the attendant asked me if I was in a hurry. Hmm, “no,” but I would like to get moving because it is hot here in the sun! I got my $5.00 motorcycle pass and taped it to the windshield, ugh!  Loaded with maps I proceeded towards the headquarters and the only detour I would have time to take in the park.  After discussing my route at the check in station and checking my clock, I realized that I did not have enough time to tour the whole park and make my end of the day goal of Del Rio.   (read more...)
