We arrived in Gunnision, fairly late in the day....and nearly did not find a room to stay in. Keep in mind it was July 4th, and I rarely plan ahead more than five minutes or so.
Fortunately, we found a room at the Days Inn that ended up being a pleasant place to stay, and I definately would go back there. We of course headed to town to eat dinner at one of the local Mexican Food Restaurants. The streets were crowded, and there was a big 4th event going on in town. There was live music, and entertainment everywhere. I guess I was being a bit of a bore, and headed back to the hotel, though we did sit outside and watch the fireworks display later...while I smoked a cigar.. life is good!!!!
We woke the next morning fairly late, and heard a strange noise outside... It seems that several hot air balloons were landing, and, in fact, one of them was actually setting down on the road near us! I took a few quick pictures through the window.. unfortunately you can see the screen also...so much for that! After the excitement of seeing the balloons land and a quick continental breakfast, we started loading the bike. The evening before, we had met some other bikers that had parked beside us. That morning, we spent a few minutes chatting with them before we headed out toward Lake City.
The morning was a bit cool, but very nice as we headed further west towards our turn. The Colorado high country is a wonderful place to ride, and this was no exception. It was a hard choice to not go on toward Montrose and drop down towards Ouray and some of the other high country roads I had ridden a few years before. As it turned out, our ride to Lake City was well chosen, and though we did not spend a lot of time there, it was a nice ride in with winding roads and changing elevations. Lake City sits near 9000 feet. Our time was shortened because of pending rain, and in fact, it snowed on us briefly as we started out of Lake City heading toward Creede. read more....
