Ok, so after a quick stop at the local store to get some gas, and a brief respite, we decided to move on. Lake City is an old town, with lots of history and some neat places to visit. I guess we should have spent more time there, but the road was calling, and was that thunder I heard booming through the mountains?
We decided we could beat the rain, and didn’t suit up, we were nearly right, and actually didn’t get too wet. In fact, we had snow flakes on us as we climbed up the pass away from Lake City. We did see the storm dropping rain very near to us on more than one occasion as we snaked around the road up the mountain. This is a beautiful ride, and we met other bikes every few miles. After a while, you end up in a bit of flat ground between mountain ranges, near the headwaters of the Rio Grande River.... yes the same one that borders Texas and Mexico...It makes for a beautiful picture setting and it pretty much just meanders along for several miles through beaver ponds and relative lowlands of the mountain ranges. After several more miles, we ended up in Creede, another historic mining town...though things do look different now than they did just 20 years ago.
The mines outside of town are not as prominent, but the town was full of tourists. It was nearing lunch time, but everything that caught my eye was full...besides the ride was still calling! As a side note: there are numerous places to explore in and around Creede, with lots of mining history and some visible mines from yesteryear. The road was calling, so away we went towards South Fork! read more....
